The Perfect Shade of Red

Red - the color of passion, confidence, and love. Everyone loves a good red lipstick; it makes us feel like rockstars when it looks great on us and gives our outfits just that little extra dramatic boost.

Then tragedy strikes - we see the color in the store and think “Oh, that would look nice on me”. We buy it, then when we put it on we think “OH DEAR GOD THIS IS NOT RIGHT!”

For the longest time that had happened to me (and I’m sure to many of you) until I learned the secret to finding the perfect shade of red lipstick.  And it has to do with two little words: “Silver” and “Gold”. Yup, that’s right; all you have to do is determine if you look better in silver or gold.

TIP: If you look better in gold you have a warmer skin tone. If you look better in silver you have a cooler skin tone.

If you have a cooler skin tone, go with blue-based or coral reds (let's think Amy Adams). Wine shades, burgundy, and dark brick reds compliment darker skin tones the best (Can you say Rashida Jones?). NOW…for those lucky enough to have that special skin tone where both gold and silver look dy-no-miiiiitte on you, you can pretty much rock all of these colors and look fab.

Bish, bosh, bash, SORTED. Now, for a few tips for application. Red lipstick is the biggest fiend for “bleeding” off your lips, so a lip liner is highly recommended with this color. Lip liner is not supposed to be noticeable so go with a shade that is your lipstick color or slightly darker (this adds definition when it's darker and keeps your lipstick where it ought to be). Lighter lip liners generally cause lips to look 2D but  is great when you just need to outline your lips before getting to the heavy stuff.

If you are looking for a more precise shape that follows your natural lip line or are painting a new shape to them (Which is crazy talk, btw. You're natural lip shape is perfect the way it is!) a lip brush does the trick. If you’d like your lipstick to stay on a little longer, try applying your favorite non-greasy moisturizing lip balm before application so it will cling. Don’t forget to blot!

I hope this was helpful to you! I’d love to hear in the comments what you guys thought and how this worked out for you! Also, if you guys feel like being the absolute DOLLS you are, go ahead and leave some suggestions for what else you’d like to see or what you guys need help on in the comments or send 'em to our email (go.lovely101@gmail.com)
